What is the church?

The New Testament places a high importance on the church. You can describe the church in many ways. Here is one thought-provoking expression:

The church is a stable body of believers responding to the Holy Spirit, living out their faith in their own culture yet distinct from it.
(From a publication of New Tribes Mission)

I especially resonate with the emphasis “in their own culture yet distinct from it.”

What about this description seems noteworthy to you? What other definintion or description of the church have you found to be helpful?

  1. Thoughts go to Jesus’ mention of us as salt. Pure salt has a purifying and flavoring effect. Pray the church today will retain salinity to purify and flavor our culture for the better as Jesus intended. Jesus cautions (saltless) salt is no better than gravel to be stomped upon and has no distinction.
