Los Angeles Journal – Saturday, January 31, 2009

Yesterday we flew to Los Angeles to vist our new granddaughter, born to our daughter Melanie and her husband Julio on January 27.

The baby’s name is quite unusual:Genesis. But it didn’t take us long to warm up to the name.

Here is a photo of this delightful new person who has come into our family.

And here is her older sister Samaya, age 23 months.

The weather here is just right: in the 70s and 80s, and sunny all day long.
Julio and Melanie live in an apartment about one mile north of the high rise office buildings of central L.A.

Their apartment is on the ground floor. This is two blocks north of Sunset Boulevard, famous because some distance west of here it runs through Hollywood.

We are amazed at how abundant the bird of paradise plants and flowers are in southern California.

This one is growing alongside Julio and Melanie’s apartment.
And nearby I found this bright cluster of Stargazer lilies.

The astute observer will note that they are made of silk! But they were stuck in with a neighbor’s living potted plant, and I couldn’t resist.

For exercise JoLene and I walk to and around Echo Park, just three blocks south of the apartment.

A lake fills the park, which is three blocks wide and 6 or 8 blocks long. I see a wide variety of birds here: herring gulls, bufflehead ducks, double-crested cormorants, Brewer’s blackbirds, black-crowned night-herons, and red-tailed hawks, to name a few.

Looking south in the park, you see the office buildings of downtown L.A.

  1. The weather and scenery does look lovely in the pictures, but the best pic is the top one of the new babe! Thank you. I have been checking for pictures the day after you flew out there! Love to all!

    • Thanks, Jill, for being a devoted follower of our blog!

  2. What absolutely lovely girls. You both must be so proud and happy. I have followed your journey from the first posting but never replied. But the beautiful babies begged a comment. Have a wonderful visit, kiss the little ones much and then come home safely to us, your other family. Love to you all, Nancy

    • Nancy,
Thanks for coming out of silence to send a comment! Yes, we feel exceptionally blessed by God in our family experiences. Melanie says that Genesis looks just like Samaya did at birth, and we all agree. Last night Genesis slept for 3 1/2 hours on two differnt occasions, giving her mother a much needed break.

  3. Congratulations Grandpa and Grandma Hawbaker. Aren’t grandchildren wonderful?
    Ed & Martha

    • Ed and Martha,
Yes, we are thoroughly enjoying this stage of life.
Genesis sleeps three or four hours at a time at night – a feat that Samaya never accomplished for 18 months!

  4. Enjoyed the pictures of the dear babies and CA. It looks like a wonderful vacation spot. With grand babies there you get wonderful experiences to boot.
