Kansas Trip Journal 1

We are on a 3-week road trip to Kansas, Missouri and Ohio, combining vacation and missions work.

At Effingham, IL, we stopped to see The Cross.

198 feet tall, equal to a 20-story building, erected by a not-for-profit ecumenical organization. The mission statement: To share the Christian message of love, forgiveness, hope and eternal life through Jesus Christ with as many people as possible through programs, activities and the symbolism of the Cross.

The area includes an information center, a video showing the impressive construction of the Cross, and a chapel.

  1. Effingham IL pop 12,500. Why locate cross there? I suppose “If we build it they will come”-and you did!

I hear the Engle family recently had a gathering in Dickinson County Kansas, in part in observing the 130th year since the 1879 BIC migration to that community.

I currently am reading Benjamin Rush: An Account of the Manners of the German Inhabitants of Pennsylva at http://www.archive.org/stream/anaccountmanner00rushgoog#page/n39/mode/1up.

    • Yes, why Effingham? The only clue I have is that the local believers noted the high rate of traffic on I-70 and concluded this is a good place to give visibility to the Christian faith.
