Goodby, Florida
February 6, 2011

We are not the only people from Manor Church who go south for some sunshine. Walt and Ann Schlemmer have a love condo unit on Treasure Island. They took us out to dinner at Leverocks, a really good seafood place. And they arranged that Hen and Marsha Barley, Jim and Francine Kauffman and Glenn and Joyce Rohrer joined us at the restaurant. What a party we had!

On Saturday, February 5, we drove to Orlando to visit Matt and Kori Blowers and their children. Matt is pastor of The Harbour Brethren in Christ Church, which is in creative partnership with Vista Community Church. For my missions work I wanted to talk with Matt about the missions awareness and involvement of his church. And, personally, we were glad to be with them since Matt is my nephew.

Today, February 6, we went with them to church. On the way, we stopped by the Florida campus of Asbury Theological Seminary, where Matt is a student.

The campus consists of this one building you see above. I was a student at Asbury’s main campus in Wilmore, KY, from 1965-1968 and was graduated in 1968.

Then Matt and his family took us out to eat at Bubbalou’s Bodacious Bar-B-Que. What a name! The brisket is delicious or bodacious or some other creative adjective.

So ends our working vacation. Every day I did some office work on my laptop. Every day we did something fun.

So Florida, goodby for now. Hope to see you again.

Birds in Florida

We have had sunshine most of the week, with some clouds a few days. Temperatures from 70 to 80 degrees. To all my friends in cold and snowy PA, I wish you were here!

I went birding on several days, at Fort De Soto Park, Lake Seminole Park, the beach behind our condo, and any pond anywhere that looked interesting.

Here is the condo where we are staying.

This is the famous Don Cesar Resort Hotel on St Petersburg Beach, where the movie stars used to go, and maybe still do, for all I know.

Here is our condo in Belleair Beach.

There are barrier islands all along the west coast of this part of Florida, and our condo is on Gulf of Mexico side of one of these islands.

So here is the back side of our building, facing the Gulf.

And here was the view the first evening we arrived.

Down the street from us are some elegant homes, this one with ocean art on the gate.

I’m afraid that this gate on our driveway back home would be a bit overdone.

Now in Florida
February 2, 2011

So now we are in Florida on what I am calling a working vacation.

It began with plans for a week of vacation at a condo on the Gulf of Mexico, just north of St. Petersburg. Then I began finding contacts I could or should make for Roxbury Holiness Camp and for my work with World Missions. So about half of the time is spent on ministry and half as vacation.

But to be here in sunshine with temperatures of 70 to 76 degrees instead of in PA in an ice storm – well, who would complain?

We arrived here on Saturday, January 29, and will start home on Sunday, February 6.

I hope to post more, soon.
