My mother’s birthday
May 16, 2013

Grace Hawbaker, my mother, turned age 93 on May 14, 2013. She lives alone in her own home, which is located at the entrance of the family farm near Chambersburg. On May 13 we four children and our spouses had a dinner with mother at her home.

Here you see mother with us kids. For those who do not know our family, I am the one on the left, child number two of four.

And here is the table ready for dinner. We had her favorite springtime meal – sausage (turkey sausage this time), rhubarb knepp (soft dumplings), asparagus and lemon sponge pie.

The table

It was an evening of joy, memories and thanksgiving to God.

Celebrating in Fine Style
October 8, 2008

It’s not every day that you get invited to an ambassador’s house.

On Sunday, October 5, our next-door neighbors here in Lancaster took us as their guests to Washington, D.C., to a first-class buffet feast. Since Sunday was the first Sunday after the end of Ramadan, the Muslim month of fasting, the Ambassador from Indonesia, as is his custom every year, threw a feast at his home for anyone who wished to attend. The attendees were mostly Indonesian (of our neighbor couple, the wife is Indonesian) but friends of Indonesia from many ethnic groups were present also. The food was, of course, Indonesian: chicken, beef, rice, sticky rice, soup, spices, fresh fruit, and a vast spread of desserts, mostly made of rice, cocoanut and brown sugar.

We met so many delightful people and were warmly welcomed.

I thought you might like to peek in on the celebration.
